UM Statistics:

"Just one person recycling their newspaper, magazines, plastic, glass, and metal for one year is enough to save 471 pounds of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere. If all 62,000 UM students, faculty, and staff recycled this amount for a year this would be equivalent to taking 2,413 cars off the road."  - U of M

EPA Statistics:

"Recycling and composting prevented 85 million tons of material away from being disposed of 2010, up from 18 million tons in 1980. This prevented the release of approximately 186 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent into the air in 2010—equivalent to taking 36 million cars off the road for a year." -  EPA
